After dark, the forest around Habarana belongs to a different cast of animals. This night safari takes you through the Horiwila area of Habarana and the surroundings of Horiwila Wewa (Horiwila Tank) in a 4x4 jeep fitted with a powerful spotlight, with an experienced naturalist guide to find and explain what comes out at night.
The drive runs outside the national parks, where night drives are not allowed, so it is a way to see Sri Lanka's dry-zone forest at an hour few visitors do.
What you might see
- Large mammals: leopards, elephants and sloth bears.
- Smaller night hunters: civets, jungle cats and porcupines.
- Night birds: Indian nightjars and barn owls.
These are wild animals and no sighting can be promised; every night is different.
