The Moonstone (Sandakada Pahana) has been a permanent component of the Buddhist construction of all historical periods. This is a half-round block of stone that stood at the foot of a flight of steps in most Buddhist buildings. The sculptural design, in its principal elements, comprises a half lotus in the middle, encircled by concentric bands of a row of geese, a foliated pattern, and a parade of animals.
