Minneriya National Park is known above all for its elephants. This safari collects you from your hotel in Kitulgala and takes you into a park where wetlands run into agricultural land and rocky outcrops, and forest gives way to scrubland. That mix of habitats is why the wildlife list is so varied: crocodiles, deer coming down to the Minneriya reservoir, birds in numbers, and if luck is with you, the extremely rare grey slender loris.
Your chauffeur picks you up at 9.00 am and drives you to the park, where a driver-tracker takes over for the safari itself. Three options let you choose morning activity, evening activity or a full day in the field. In August, September and October you may catch the congregation known as the 'Elephant Gathering', with over 150 elephants in one place, said to arrive annually from all the surrounding areas. On the evening safari, the best time to see this park, you watch elephants take their daily bath and birds head back to their nests. You are back at your hotel by 07:30 pm.
