About this experience
Step off the ship at Colombo Port at 08:30 and head inland with your private, English-speaking chauffeur-guide in an air-conditioned vehicle. The drive takes you to Pinnawala, where you arrive at the Millennium Elephant Foundation by midday. MEF is a family-run NGO established in 1999, dedicated to the welfare of domestic elephants across Sri Lanka — funding veterinary care, mahout salaries, and a mobile veterinary unit that travels the country treating elephants in need.
Your one-to-two-hour Elephant Walk Experience begins with an expert educational talk and a tour of the on-site museum. Then you walk one-on-one alongside an elephant through the foundation's grounds before joining the mahout to bathe the same elephant in the river — your group only, no other tourists. Explore the Elephant Dung Paper Factory at no extra charge before lunch at your own cost. Your guide has you back at Colombo Port by 17:30. Entrance fees, bottled mineral water, and all taxes are included; gratuities and meals are not.
