A Sinhala-language title from the scholar, film director and lyricist Sunil Ariyaratne, published in Colombo by Godage International Publishers. The whole book is in Sinhala, with no English text, so it will suit readers who are comfortable reading the language. Its subject is the two men named in the title, Lionel Algama and Austin Munasinghe.
Ariyaratne was born in Nugegoda and read for a Sinhala Honours degree at Vidyodaya, now the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He taught at the Universities of Kelaniya and Jaffna before returning to Sri Jayewardenepura, where he was appointed professor and later senior professor. Alongside academic work he has directed films, among them Anupama, Sarungale, Uppalawanna and Kusa Pabha, and has written song lyrics for performers including Nanda Malini, W. D. Amaradeva and Victor Rathnayake. His other books include Demala Sahithya Ithihasaya and Visithuruya Re Ahasa, a gathering of his own lyrics.
That combination — a university career in Sinhala letters running in parallel with a working life in cinema and popular song — shapes what he writes about. Readers who already follow his writing on Sinhala arts and letters will recognise the territory here.
Godage International Publishers is an established Colombo house issuing books in Sinhala and English across literature, biography, history and the arts, and much of its Sinhala list circulates mainly within Sri Lanka. For buyers outside the country, a copy of a Sinhala-language study of this kind is usually easier to obtain through a Sri Lankan seller than through general international channels.
