The Lakpura Batik Saree in Design S020 is a fully handmade saree crafted in Sri Lanka using traditional wax-resist batik techniques. Every length is worked by hand, placing this piece within a living craft tradition that arrived on the island at the turn of the nineteenth century and has since developed a character entirely its own.
The fabric is voile — a lightweight, plain-woven cloth with a smooth, silky hand and a fine drape that moves well in warm weather. Its tightly twisted yarns give it a quiet structural integrity despite the delicacy of the weave, and its smooth surface holds batik dyes with particular clarity, allowing intricate pattern work to read cleanly against the cloth. The saree measures 5.60 metres in length, and the listing also includes an unstitched blouse piece of 0.90 metres in the colour shown.
The batik process itself involves applying hot wax to the fabric using a janting tool or brush, masking the areas that are to remain free of colour. The cloth is then dyed, and once the wax is removed the reserved pattern is revealed. Where a design calls for more than one colour, the sequence is repeated, building the final composition layer by layer. The result carries the character marks of hand production — slight variations in texture and the distribution of the design are a natural part of the work, not a flaw.
Sri Lankan batik draws on a broad vocabulary of motifs, some rooted in older decorative traditions and others reflecting the individual sensibility of the artisan. The palette and pattern of Design S020 are visible in the product imagery; as with all hand-dyed cloth, the colour you receive may differ slightly from what a screen or photograph shows, owing to the nature of the dyeing process and the behaviour of different display devices.
Dry cleaning is recommended to preserve the cloth and the integrity of the dyes. The blouse piece included is unstitched and intended to be tailored to the wearer's measurements. Accessories and styling shown in any product imagery are for presentation only and are not included with the saree.
