About this experience
Negombo Lagoon is one of Sri Lanka's most productive estuarine fishing grounds, a broad, shallow expanse of brackish water fringed by mangroves and fed by small rivers and the historic Dutch Canal before opening to the Indian Ocean near the city. This three-hour guided session puts you on the water with a knowledgeable local fishing guide, rod-and-reel equipment, and the kind of unhurried access to good spots that independent visitors rarely manage on their own.
The session departs from a pier on the lagoon's banks, with a choice of a morning start at 8:00 am or an afternoon start at 3:00 pm. Once out on the water, your guide will take you to the most promising areas and advise on technique — the lagoon responds well to topwater plugs, spoons, spinners, and live bait. Species that move through these waters include seer, mullet, pomfret, herring, amberjack, and skipjack, alongside lobster and shrimp which frequent the shallows. Refreshments are provided to keep you comfortable while you wait for a bite. As you fish, egrets, herons, kingfishers, and cormorants work the mangrove margins around you, and the occasional monitor lizard passes along the bank — the lagoon is as much a wildlife setting as a fishing one.
Safety jackets and all sports fishing equipment are provided, so there is no need to arrive with gear. Participants must be fifteen years of age or older. At the close of the session you are returned to the pier with whatever you have caught.
For those who want to round off the experience on the water's edge, an optional barbecue supplement is available: if you select it, a grill is set up at the pier after the session so you can eat what you caught. The session is private, so the boat and guide are yours for the duration. Hotel transfers are not included in the base experience, so you will need to make your own way to and from the departure pier. Gratuities for your guide are at your own discretion.
