Jetwing St. Andrew's is a restored 1875 Georgian-style country mansion in Nuwara Eliya, set in six acres of gardens beside the town's golf course. Inside it keeps the feel of a hill-country club: timber floors, antique furniture, open fires, a pub-style bar and one of the oldest snooker tables in Sri Lanka.
Every room has an individual heating unit for the cool highland nights, an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold water, a satellite television, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee things, an electronic safe and a hairdryer; baby cots are available on request. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Jetwing sells the Superior rooms and suites for two adults. Bookings with us can take up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children, in those categories, and up to four adults in the Deluxe Attic; tell us who is travelling so the hotel can prepare the right bedding.
The Old Course is the main restaurant, with local and international dishes served à la carte or as a five-course dinner in a dining room full of old wood. The Road Hole Bar is styled as a traditional British pub, and the glass-walled Tea Terrace serves teas from Nuwara Eliya, Uva, Dimbula, Kandy and Ruhuna from mid-morning until midnight, looking over the gardens. Jetwing also offers signature dining: high tea on the terrace or in the lobby, dinner in the garden, a mountain barbecue or a meal in your room. Vegetables and herbs from the hotel gardens find their way into the kitchen.
The gardens are made for a slow walk, and indoors there is a TV lounge and the snooker room, whose table is around 117 years old. The resident naturalist leads a night-time frog-watching walk around the grounds with special torches, and the hotel can arrange a car or rent you a bicycle for the hills. Room service runs until midnight, and laundry and a doctor on call are available.
The hotel stands on St Andrew's Drive beside the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, one of the most scenic in Asia, and the racecourse is close by. In town, Victoria Park has quiet promenades, and Lake Gregory on the outskirts is good for an afternoon on or beside the water. Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka's highest peak, rises over the town, and tea factories such as Blue Field are within easy reach. Further afield are Hakgala Botanical Gardens, Horton Plains National Park and stretches of the long-distance Pekoe Trail.
Yes. The hill-country railway, often called one of the most scenic lines in the world, stops at Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, a short drive below the town. Arrange a pick-up with the hotel or with us in advance.
Jetwing puts Nuwara Eliya about 140 kilometres from Colombo, a drive of around five hours past tea estates and waterfalls. From Bandaranaike International Airport, north of the city, allow a little longer. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing St. Andrew's, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits travellers who want the old colonial side of Nuwara Eliya, with fires, gardens and a proper pub, within easy reach of the town and the golf course; families do well in the Deluxe Attic rooms.
