About this experience

Isurumuniya Temple stands at the edge of a lotus pond in Anuradhapura, carved partly into a dramatic natural rock face that has sheltered Buddhist worship here for centuries. The temple forms an integral part of the Anuradhapura Sacred City, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its combination of living religious practice and exceptional ancient craftsmanship draws visitors from across Sri Lanka and beyond.

The temple is particularly celebrated for its rock carvings, which rank among the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan artistry. The most famous of these is the "Isurumuniya Lovers," a delicately rendered panel depicting a couple in a tender embrace, believed by many scholars to date from the Anuradhapura period. Other carvings portray animals and deities with a precision that speaks to the sophistication of the craftsmen who created them. The adjoining museum houses a selection of sculptures and artefacts recovered from the site, providing further context for what visitors observe on the rock face itself.

Entrance tickets cover access to both the temple grounds and the museum. The guided service included with each ticket allows visitors to explore the carvings, the pond-side setting and the surrounding rock formations with the benefit of informed commentary on the site's history and religious significance.
