Located close to Dambulla, Ibbankatuwa is one of Sri Lanka's most significant protected archaeological sites, covering 15 acres and centred on a remarkable complex of Megalithic Tombs dating to between 700 and 400 B.C. First identified in 1970, the burial ground is associated with the megalithic prehistoric and protohistoric periods, and the tomb complex itself extends across approximately 1 km², comprising around 42 clusters of tombs.
Each cluster contains roughly ten individual tombs, with every tomb enclosed by stone slabs. Excavations here have uncovered cremated remains, tools, grave goods, and large terra cotta urns containing cists. Particularly striking among the finds are artefacts and necklaces set with gemstones traced to foreign lands, pointing to connections that reached well beyond the island during this early period.
Entrance tickets booked through Lakpura include a guided service, allowing visitors to explore the site with informed commentary on its archaeology and historical significance. Physical tickets are collected from a Lakpura representative before entering the site, and booking in advance helps to avoid any delays on arrival.
