G. C. E. O/L Art New Syllabus Sinhala Medium is a study book for Sri Lankan students taking art at Ordinary Level. Written by Milton Maddumage and published by Godage International Publishers, it is written in Sinhala for grades 10 and 11 and follows the new syllabus.
The cover sets out the book's range: a Sri Lankan temple mural beneath a spreading tree, the painted maidens of the Sigiriya frescoes, the Great Sphinx of Giza, an ancient seated scribe and the Mona Lisa. It is a fair summary of how the subject is taught, placing Sri Lanka's own traditions of painting and sculpture alongside landmarks of world art.
At 140 pages it is a compact companion to classroom lessons rather than a heavy reference work, suited to revision in the two years leading up to the examination. The Sinhala title on the cover reads Chitra Kalawa, the name of the subject in Sinhala-medium schools.
Published in 2016, the paperback is a practical choice for students, parents buying for a child in grade 10 or 11, and teachers building a small reference shelf for the art classroom.
