Elephant Rock Snorkeling from Pasikudah is a boat trip out from Pasikudah, on Sri Lanka's east coast in Batticaloa District, to a snorkelling spot at Elephant Rock. You board the boat at Pasikudah, ride along the eastern shoreline, and then slip into the water with a mask and snorkel to look down on what lies beneath the surface.
Pasikudah is known for its long stretch of shallow reef coastline, and for currents that are relatively weak compared with much of the island's shore. The boat ride gives you that coast from the water: pale shallows, the line of the beach and the open sea beyond, before the boat stops at Elephant Rock.
Snorkelling here is done at the surface. You float face down, breathe through the snorkel tube and watch the seabed below, where reef fish and coral formations may be seen in the shallow water around the rock. What appears on any given day is up to the sea, and a guide is on hand to help with the equipment and in the water.
The experience includes a one-hour boat ride, two hours of snorkelling, snorkelling equipment and assistance from an experienced guide. Hotel pick-up and drop-off, food and drinks, gratuities and personal expenses are not included, so plan to make your own way to Pasikudah.
Participants need basic swimming ability. The trip is not wheelchair accessible, infants must sit on laps during the boat ride, and it is not recommended for travellers with serious medical conditions. Weather and sea conditions may affect the experience.
