This guided ride follows the west coast of Sri Lanka from Colombo to Negombo, covering about 30 km of countryside and back-country roads. You are collected from your hotel in Colombo and driven to Crow Island, where the cycling begins at 8 am and takes approximately four to five hours. A bicycle, helmet and safety gear are provided, and an English-speaking cycling host rides with you.
The route is a gentle one, tracing the Dutch canal and the western coastal belt. Along the way you pass the fishing life of the coast, and you might see different fishing techniques in use or hear fishing-related folk songs. Birds gather along the canal and the Negombo Lagoon. Rest stops come at regular intervals, with refreshments such as water and energy bars.
In Negombo there is a city tour that takes in a 150-year-old church, followed by the fisheries harbour and a dry fish market. A back-up vehicle travels with the group throughout and can respond if an emergency arises. At the end of the ride you are driven back to your hotel in Colombo.
