About this experience
Step into a working chena — the traditional slash-and-cultivation fields that have shaped Sri Lankan rural life for centuries. Your guide walks you through the plantation, explaining how local farmers select crops, manage the land across seasons, and weave chena cultivation into the rhythms of daily life near Tissamaharama. It is a private, hands-on two hours that puts genuine village culture within reach.
Back at the chena huts, watch a cook prepare a traditional Sri Lankan lunch using ingredients straight from the surrounding fields. When the meal is ready, sit down and eat amongst the crops — rice, curries, and accompaniments made the way they have always been made here. Children aged five and above are welcome. Note that hotel pickup is not included, so arrange your own transport to the meeting point before the session begins.
