A day in Bundala National Park is a day spent among wetlands, lagoons and scrubland on Sri Lanka's southern coast, in a landscape built almost entirely around water and the birds that depend on it. This safari collects you from your hotel in Hikkaduwa and carries you to the park in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver, where a safari jeep and guide take over for the drive through the reserve itself. It suits anyone with a working curiosity about wildlife rather than a checklist mentality - Bundala rewards patience and a good pair of eyes more than it rewards hurry.
Bundala holds a rare set of credentials for a park of its size. It was the first site in Sri Lanka to be named a Ramsar wetland of international importance, and in 2005 UNESCO designated it a Biosphere Reserve, one of only a handful in the country. Birdlife International separately lists it as an Important Bird Area, and the reasons are plain to see on the ground: saltwater lagoons, tidal flats and marsh give way to scrub and open grassland, a patchwork that supports an unusually wide range of species in a relatively compact area.
Birds are the park's great draw, with close to 200 species recorded and the greater flamingo its best-known visitor, arriving in large flocks during migration season. Expect to see painted storks working the shallows on their curved orange bills, purple swamphens picking their way across lily-covered ponds, darters drying outstretched wings on a bare branch, and hornbills moving through the tree line with their heavy, casqued bills. Cormorants, spoonbills, ducks and the Eurasian coot round out a list that changes with the season, and a three-hour jeep safari gives a genuine chance of covering several of the park's habitats in a single outing.
Beyond the birdlife, Bundala is one of the few parks in Sri Lanka where both of the country's crocodile species, the freshwater mugger and the estuarine crocodile, can be seen, and its wider species count runs into the hundreds once reptiles, mammals and fish are included. None of this is guaranteed on any given visit, which is part of what makes a safari here feel like an actual outing into a working ecosystem rather than a staged encounter.
The tour runs as a private, eight-hour day from your Hikkaduwa hotel, suitable for travellers aged five and up. An English-speaking driver, the jeep safari inside Bundala, and all taxes and service charges are included; park entrance tickets, food and drinks, personal expenses and gratuities are not, so it is worth settling those details before you set off.
