About this experience
Situated along the Thanamalwila Road between Ella and Wellawaya, Buduruwagala is an ancient Buddhist site whose name translates directly as "the rock with Buddhist sculptures". The complex centres on a large rock face into which seven figures have been carved, dominated by a standing Buddha statue of over fifty feet — widely regarded as the largest standing Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. Local tradition also holds that the rock formation itself takes the shape of a kneeling elephant with its head bowed.
The carvings follow the Mahayana Buddhist style, and several of the figures are believed to date to the late Anuradhapura period, placing them among the older examples of rock sculpture on the island. The site offers a rare opportunity to examine ancient craftsmanship on a significant scale, and is of particular interest to those drawn to early South Asian religious art and history.
