This is a Sinhala-language title from Godage International Publishers, written by Prof. J. B. Disanayaka. The text is in Sinhala script throughout, so it will suit readers who are comfortable reading the language — something worth knowing before ordering from abroad.
Disanayaka is a scholar of the Sinhala language. He graduated from the University of Ceylon at Peradeniya, took a master's degree in linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, on a Fulbright scholarship, and went on to a doctorate from the University of Colombo. He taught at Colombo for decades and headed its Department of Sinhala. Outside the university he served as Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Thailand. He has written widely in both Sinhala and English on language, culture and history; his English-language titles include Understanding the Sinhalese and Aspects of Sinhala Folklore.
Much of his writing in Sinhala has been aimed at general readers rather than specialists, and his books are a familiar sight in Sri Lankan bookshops. Readers who already know his work will recognise the territory: the Sinhala language and the culture carried in it, treated by someone who spent a working life studying both.
Godage International Publishers is an established Colombo house issuing books in Sinhala and English across scholarship, literature and general non-fiction, and it has published a good deal of Disanayaka's Sinhala-language output.
This is a slim volume. For buyers outside Sri Lanka, Sinhala titles of this kind are rarely stocked by general booksellers abroad, and they are usually sought out by readers of the language living overseas, by students of Sinhala, and by libraries and private collections building holdings in Sri Lankan writing.
