The Lakpura Alponsu Mango Grafted Plant is a young mango tree of the Alponsu variety, better known internationally as Alphonso, or Hapus. It lets you raise this celebrated Indian mango as a tree of your own in a warm-climate garden.
Alphonso comes from the Konkan coast of western India and takes its name from Afonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese viceroy of the early sixteenth century. When ripe, the fruit is egg-shaped, with golden-yellow skin that often carries a reddish blush, and its saffron-coloured flesh is creamy, juicy and free of fibre.
Because it is grafted, the plant carries a shoot of the named variety joined onto a rootstock, so it grows true to Alphonso in a way a tree raised from seed cannot promise. The graft joint shows as a slight collar on the slender stem, below a crown of long, glossy green leaves.
The plant is supplied growing in a black polythene nursery bag, ready to be planted out. It is an evergreen tree suited to tropical and subtropical climates, where it wants full sun and well-drained soil. The fruit in the second photograph shows the variety and is not part of the order.
