Tula (Libra) and Vrischika (Scorpio) sit side by side in the zodiac, and their marriage matching reads quite differently depending on which sign belongs to the bride and which to the groom. What does the rashi mean in Sri Lankan marriage matching?
In Sri Lanka, the rashi used for porondam and porutham is the moon sign (chandra rashi), worked out in the sidereal zodiac. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so a person's Tula or Vrischika here refers to where the Moon stood at birth.
Matching begins by counting from the bride's rashi to the groom's. Because Tula and Vrischika are neighbours, the count is 2 when the bride is Tula and 12 when the bride is Vrischika. The rulers of the two signs are Venus (Tula) and Mars (Vrischika), which are treated as mutually neutral, neither friends nor enemies. These three rashi items are only a small part of the whole picture.
How do the results read for a Tula bride and a Vrischika groom?
With the bride in Tula and the groom in Vrischika, the groom's sign is the second from the bride's. In Sinhala porondam, the rashi item is not obtained for this count, rashyadhipathi (the sign lords) is partly obtained, reflecting the neutral Venus–Mars relationship, and vashya is not obtained.
In Tamil porutham, rasi is not obtained, rasi adhipathi is obtained, since neutral lords are accepted in that system, and vasya is not obtained. The two traditions weigh the lords slightly differently, which is why the same pair can show a partial result in one and a full result in the other. None of this settles the match on its own.
How do the results read for a Vrischika bride and a Tula groom?
Reversing the pair changes the count to 12, as the groom's sign now sits just before the bride's. In Sinhala porondam, the rashi item is partly obtained, rashyadhipathi is again partly obtained because Mars and Venus are neutral, and vashya is not obtained.
In Tamil porutham, this direction is noticeably stronger at rashi level: rasi is obtained, rasi adhipathi is obtained, and vasya is not obtained. Vashya, which looks at a natural pull between the two signs, is not obtained in either direction for this pairing. The difference between the two directions is a good reminder that who holds which sign genuinely matters in traditional matching.
Why do the two birth stars decide the real match?
Most porondam and porutham items depend on the bride's and groom's birth stars (nakshatra), not the rashi. For each direction there are 81 possible star-quarter combinations, and the outcomes vary widely. With a Tula bride and Vrischika groom, 49% pass Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item), none reach 8 of 10 Tamil porutham, and 70% are weak in Tamil matching. With a Vrischika bride and Tula groom, 96% pass Sinhala porondam, 47% reach 8 of 10 porutham, and only 4% are weak. A Tamil rajju clash appears in 4% of combinations either way.
