Kataka (Cancer) and Vrischika (Scorpio) are a pairing many Sri Lankan families ask about. Some rashi-level results depend on which partner holds which sign, so this page explains both directions. It also shows why the two birth stars, not the rashis alone, settle the final porondam or porutham.

Which Kataka and Vrischika are we talking about?

In Sri Lankan marriage matching, the rashi is the Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon occupied at birth, calculated in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign found in newspaper horoscope columns, so someone who calls themselves a Cancer or Scorpio in that sense may have a different chandra rashi.

Both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham look at a few rashi-level items: the rashi count between the two signs, the rashi lords (rashyadhipathi or rasi adhipathi), and vashya (vasya). For Kataka and Vrischika, some of these results stay the same whichever way round the couple are. The rashi count does not, so each direction is described separately below.

How do the results look with a Kataka bride and a Vrischika groom?

Counting from the bride's sign to the groom's, Vrischika is the 5th sign from Kataka. In this direction the calculator marks the rashi item as not obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems.

The other two rashi items are more encouraging. Kataka is ruled by the Moon and Vrischika by Mars. Mars regards the Moon as a friend, while the Moon regards Mars as neutral. This 'friend and neutral' relationship is enough for the rashi lord item to be obtained in both systems. Vashya is also obtained. So in this direction, two of the three rashi-level items are obtained and one is not.

What changes when the bride is Vrischika and the groom is Kataka?

Reversing the couple changes the count. From a Vrischika bride to a Kataka groom, Kataka is the 9th sign. In this direction the rashi item is obtained in both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham.

The rashi lords are still the Moon and Mars with the same 'friend and neutral' relationship, so that item remains obtained. Vashya is obtained as well. With a Vrischika bride and a Kataka groom, all three rashi-level items are obtained in both systems.

This is a good example of why matching is always read from the bride's side to the groom's. The same two signs can produce a different result once the partners are swapped.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

The rashi items are only part of the picture. Most porondam and porutham items depend on the two birth stars (nakshatra). Each rashi spans nine star-quarters, so one pair of signs allows 81 star-quarter combinations, and their results vary widely.

With a Kataka bride and Vrischika groom, about 10% of combinations reach 8 of 10 porutham, and about 69% pass Sinhala porondam (leaving aside the weekday item). With a Vrischika bride and Kataka groom, about 54% reach 8 of 10 porutham and 100% pass Sinhala porondam on that basis. In both directions, around 41% of combinations are weak in Tamil porutham, and the same share show a rajju clash. Your own stars decide which group you fall into.
