Sri Lanka's small land area conceals one of the most concentrated assemblages of reptiles and amphibians on earth. The island qualifies as a global biodiversity hotspot in no small part because of its herpetofauna — a group that includes lizards, snakes, crocodilians, frogs, toads, and caecilians. High rates of endemism, elevation-driven habitat diversity, and millions of years of island isolation have produced species found nowhere else, many of them now under serious conservation pressure.

What agamid lizards live in Sri Lanka?

Worldwide, the family Agamidae encompasses more than 300 species. Sri Lanka hosts around 18 of them, and approximately 15 of those are endemic — an exceptional proportion for an island of this size. The majority of endemic agamids are concentrated in the southwestern wet zone and the central highlands, including the Makandawa Rainforest corridor and the Knuckles mountain range, at elevations up to around 2,000 m.

Three species illustrate the range well:

  • Common Garden Lizard (Calotes versicolor): The most frequently encountered agamid on the island. Highly arboreal and adaptable, it thrives in scrub jungle and in the garden vegetation surrounding human settlements. Males develop a vivid red head during the breeding season.
  • Green Garden Lizard (Calotes calotes): Sri Lanka's largest agamid, found island-wide up to roughly 1,500 m elevation, though most abundant in wet-zone forest. It is strongly arboreal and rarely descends to the ground.
  • Crestless Lizard (Calotes leptocephalus): One of the rarest agamids on the island, distinguished from C. calotes by the absence of supratympanic spines. Its range is now effectively restricted to the Knuckles region, making continued deforestation there a direct existential threat.

Beyond habitat loss, agamid populations face habitat fragmentation, rainwater acidification linked to industrial pollution, agricultural pesticide runoff, and the longer-term pressures of climate change. Because so many species are range-restricted — sometimes to a single mountain block or forest patch — localised disturbance can have outsized consequences.

How rich is Sri Lanka's amphibian fauna?

Sri Lanka ranks among the biologically richest countries in Asia for amphibians. The island is home to over 110 described amphibian species, of which roughly 96 are recognised as endemic — a figure that gives Sri Lanka the highest amphibian endemism rate in Asia by percentage. That distinction carries a painful corollary: the island also records Asia's highest proportion of threatened and extinct amphibian species.

Approximately 20% of Sri Lanka's amphibian fauna has been lost over the past century. Around 19 species are already considered extinct from the wild, 18 of them belonging to the shrub frog genus Pseudophilautus. A further 50% of remaining species are considered at risk of extinction if current trends continue.

Which orders and families make up Sri Lanka's amphibian fauna?

All of Sri Lanka's endemic amphibians fall within two orders:

  1. Gymnophiona (caecilians): Four species of limbless, earthworm-like amphibians. Rarely seen because they live underground or in leaf litter, caecilians are nonetheless a distinct and ancient lineage.
  2. Anura (frogs and toads): The dominant order, represented by six families. This group contains the overwhelming majority of Sri Lanka's amphibian diversity, with numerous species restricted to lowland rainforest or mid-elevation cloud forest habitats.

The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the wet zone lowlands, is among the most important refuges for threatened amphibians. The Horton Plains National Park protects a suite of high-altitude specialists found nowhere else on earth.

Where are the best places to observe Sri Lanka's herpetofauna?

Habitat type is the primary guide. Wet-zone lowland rainforests — particularly in the southwest — shelter the highest concentration of endemic lizards, frogs, and caecilians. The central highlands above 1,500 m host montane specialists. Dry-zone national parks such as Wilpattu National Park offer opportunities to observe different reptile communities, including mugger crocodiles and monitor lizards, in open habitats.

Night walks in wet-zone forests are particularly productive for amphibian observation, as most frogs are crepuscular or nocturnal. A knowledgeable local naturalist guide is essential — not only for spotting cryptic species but for avoiding disturbance to fragile habitats.

Why is so much of Sri Lanka's herpetofauna endangered?

The primary driver is habitat loss. Sri Lanka has lost a large proportion of its original forest cover over the past two centuries, and the wet zone — which holds the greatest concentration of endemic herpetofauna — has been especially heavily cleared for agriculture, tea, rubber, and urban expansion. Because so many species have tiny ranges and are highly sensitive to microhabitat conditions (temperature, humidity, canopy cover), even moderate forest degradation can push localised populations to collapse.

Secondary threats include:

  • Habitat fragmentation, which isolates populations and prevents genetic exchange
  • Agricultural pesticides entering forest-edge streams used by amphibians for breeding
  • Rainwater acidification, which affects larval development
  • Emerging infectious diseases such as chytridiomycosis, which has devastated amphibian populations globally
  • Climate change altering rainfall seasonality and temperature regimes in montane refuges

What conservation efforts are protecting Sri Lanka's herpetofauna?

Sri Lanka's network of protected areas — including national parks, strict nature reserves, and proposed conservation forests — provides a legal framework for habitat protection. Field surveys led by local and international researchers continue to document new species: Sri Lanka has seen a remarkable number of amphibian species described in the past two decades as molecular tools have revealed cryptic diversity within previously recognised species.

Community-based conservation programmes in buffer zones around key forests have shown promise in reducing encroachment. Ex-situ breeding programmes exist for a small number of critically threatened amphibians, though habitat restoration remains the only long-term solution. International bodies including the IUCN Amphibian Specialist Group treat Sri Lanka as a priority focus given the scale of endemism and threat.

Responsible wildlife tourism — low-impact, guided, and conducted within the rules of protected areas — generates local economic value linked to intact forest, creating incentives for conservation beyond the park boundaries.
