Le Grand Galle

Galle, Sri Lanka

Le Grand Galle is a contemporary hotel on Park Road in Galle, where an infinity pool looks across a lawn to the ramparts and clock tower of Galle Fort. Part of Belluna Lanka, a subsidiary of the Japanese Belluna group, it pairs warm wooden interiors with balconies facing the ocean and the old walled city, a spa offering Balinese treatments, a restaurant, a pool bar and round-the-clock in-room dining, all less than a kilometre in a straight line from the fort's gates in Galle.

What are the rooms like at Le Grand Galle?

The hotel sells six room categories, from ground-floor Deluxe rooms to suites with their own plunge pool or balcony Jacuzzi. Every room has a king-size bed (twin beds are offered in the Deluxe category), air conditioning, a minibar, a coffee machine and tea and coffee making facilities, a safe, a flat-screen TV, bathrobes and slippers, free Wi-Fi and a Toto Japanese washlet in the bathroom. The names below are the hotel's own.

  • Deluxe Room – 45 square metres on the ground floor, with a king-size bed or twin beds and a bathroom with a bathtub and rain shower. If you need twin beds, ask for them when you enquire.
  • Super Deluxe Room – an ocean-view room with soft white tones and natural wooden floors, a sitting area and a spacious balcony that catches the sunset. The bathroom has a bathtub and rain shower.
  • Signature Room – an open-plan room with warm wooden interiors and a freestanding bathtub, looking over the pool and gardens to the ocean and Galle Fort, with its own balcony and a rain shower.
  • Premium Room – ocean and fort views from a private balcony, and a bathroom with a bathtub and rain shower. Some Premium rooms also have a Jacuzzi; if you want one, say so when you enquire so the right room can be held.
  • Jacuzzi Suite – a suite with a separate living area and a private balcony with its own Jacuzzi facing the ocean, plus a spa tub and rain shower in the bathroom. It is for two adults only.
  • Plunge Pool Suite – an open-plan suite with a sitting area, a private plunge pool and a private lawn garden, with a garden view rather than a sea view, and a bathroom with both a bathtub and a rain shower.

Apart from the Jacuzzi Suite, every category sleeps up to three adults, or two adults and two children. The hotel counts children over 12 as adults. Check-in is at 2pm and check-out at noon.

Where can I eat and drink?

TASTE is the main restaurant, indoors with an open-air terrace facing Galle Fort, serving Sri Lankan specialities alongside international dishes; it hosts a barbecue buffet on Saturday evenings and a complimentary cocktail hour for guests on the outdoor deck each afternoon. DIP is the poolside bar at the edge of the infinity pool, with cocktails and light bites, and S'cape is the in-room dining service, which runs round the clock with Sri Lankan, Western and fusion dishes. The hotel also sets up private dinners in the garden or by the pool, serves a personalised high tea in the afternoons, and offers tasting trays of Ceylon arrack.

What is there to do at the hotel?

The infinity pool, with a Jacuzzi built into the deck, is the centre of the hotel. Sanatio Spa offers Balinese massage therapies, with steam and sauna rooms and a Jacuzzi that can be booked privately, and there is a fitness centre for cardio and strength training; yoga and meditation can be arranged on request. On Wednesday mornings an archaeologist leads a free tour of Galle Fort for in-house guests, and the chef runs a market tour by tuk-tuk followed by a cookery demonstration. Bicycles are available, there is live entertainment on some evenings, and Wi-Fi and parking are free.

What is nearby?

The hotel stands across from Galle Fort, the UNESCO-listed walled city built by the Portuguese and Dutch, about 700 metres away in a straight line. Within the walls you can walk the ramparts to the Galle lighthouse, visit the National Maritime Museum and the Dutch Reformed Church, and wander the lanes of cafés and boutiques. Galle International Cricket Stadium lies between the hotel and the fort. Across the bay, Rumassala, where the hotel suggests hikes, and the white Japanese Peace Pagoda are about 3 kilometres away in a straight line, and Unawatuna Beach is about 5 kilometres away.

Can I arrive by train?

Yes. Galle railway station, on the coastal line from Colombo, is about 400 metres from the hotel in a straight line, so a short tuk-tuk ride takes you from the platform to the door.

How do I get from the airport to Le Grand Galle?

The hotel is about 133 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Le Grand Galle, which takes you all the way to the door; the hotel can also arrange an airport shuttle at extra cost.

Who is Le Grand Galle best suited to?

It suits travellers who want to explore Galle Fort on foot but return to a pool, a spa and a sunset view of the ramparts, rather than stay inside the walls. Couples will like the Signature rooms and the suites with their own Jacuzzi or plunge pool, while families of four fit in most room categories. Wonderful hotel!

The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the service was impeccable. Would definitely stay here again. The hotel is located just outside the fort, and the view of the ocean and the fort is stunning.
