Silver Springs, Bandarawela, Sri Lanka

Silver Springs is a small lodge nestled in the hill country of Bandarawela, approximately 200 km from Colombo and sitting at around 4,000 ft (1,225 m) above mean sea level. At this elevation the average temperature hovers around 20°C, the air is clean and mild, and the surrounding landscape — a sweeping panorama of the Namunukula mountain range, paddy fields, tea estates, and vegetable gardens — provides a quietly dramatic backdrop to every stay.

What sets the property apart, perhaps more than anything else, is its atmosphere. The absence of most man-made noise is especially notable here, making Silver Springs a genuine retreat from the bustle of city life. Eight spacious, comfortably furnished rooms each have modern attached bathrooms with hot water, while private and common balconies open directly onto the mountain scenery. On clear mornings, the sunrise rising from behind the mountains is an added bonus for early risers. Guests may choose between freshly prepared Sri Lankan and western menus throughout their stay.

Hiking and Trekking

Hikes can be arranged either with a guide or with a route map for those who prefer to explore independently. Routes wind through mountainous roads, pine forests, tea estates, and paddy fields — a joyful exercise made all the more inviting by the clean fresh mountain air. Treks are organised with a guide and can be structured as day treks or overnight camping treks. Day treks are generally six to eight kilometres and last roughly four to six hours, with guides leading visitors to vantage points such as the top of a waterfall or a rock outcrop where the scenery is described as breathtaking. A popular variation combines a train ride to a higher elevation with a trek back down through shrub jungle or along flat roads at 4,000 ft above sea level.

Mountain Biking

Mountain bikes are available at the lodge for guests who enjoy cycling. Riders can choose between steep or flat tarred roads and off-road tracks. For those interested in a longer expedition, it is possible to ride through Horton Plains toward Nuwara Eliya via remote villages and return on the main road — a route of approximately 125 km in total.

High-Altitude Athletic Training

Outdoor running expeditions can be arranged for athletes who wish to train at altitudes ranging from 4,000 ft to 6,000 ft above sea level, making Silver Springs a practical base for high-altitude conditioning.

Birdwatching

The lodge sits high above a steep-sided valley overlooking paddy fields, riverine forest, and open woodlands, and the birdlife in the area is profuse. A stream runs through the valley and culminates in a waterfall, supporting a wide range of woodland and stream birds as well as butterflies, dragonflies, and damselflies. The roof terrace functions as a natural hide from which many species can be observed without leaving the comfort of a chair. Walking and cycling routes can also be followed in pursuit of more elusive species. To date, over 50 species have been recorded in the Silver Springs area, including the Red Jungle Fowl, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Black Eagle, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Crested Serpent Eagle, Plum Headed Parakeet, Hill Mynah, Loten's Sunbird, and Purple Rumped Sunbird, among many others.
