Nestled on 5 acres of well-maintained gardens along the edge of the Udawalawe Reservoir in Walawegama, Kalu's Hideaway is a small, characterful retreat that sits a short drive from Udawalawe National Park. The property is owned by retired Sri Lankan cricketer Romesh Kaluwitarana — known affectionately around the world as little Kalu — and carries his quietly personal touch throughout.

With its pure natural setting and unhurried atmosphere, the retreat draws wildlife enthusiasts, honeymooners, corporate groups, families, and travellers simply looking for a tranquil stopover on the road south through the Ratnapura District.

Accommodation

Kalu's Hideaway offers five spacious rooms, each furnished with wooden furniture and finished in earthy tones that blend with the surrounding landscape. Amenities include ceiling fans, attached toilets, and mosquito nets. The main building houses a private upper-deck suite alongside two separate chalets. The upper-floor double room comes with a private patio overlooking the gardens and natural surroundings, giving guests an immediate sense of the wilderness on their doorstep.

Dining and Common Spaces

The restaurant serves a blend of Eastern and Western dishes through an all-day à la carte menu, and BBQ nights are offered for those who prefer an open-air evening meal. Guests are welcome to enjoy a cold beer while taking in the natural surroundings. Adjoining the restaurant is a Japanese-style TV room in the lobby near the entrance, a quiet retreat that reinforces the simplicity and uniqueness that define the property's character.

Recreation and Facilities

An outdoor swimming pool with a jacuzzi provides a refreshing way to spend the day, surrounded by fresh air and greenery. For guests who prefer a closer connection with the outdoors, camping facilities are available on the grounds, and a range of outdoor activities can be organised on request.

Excursions

Kalu's Hideaway makes a natural base — or stopover en route to Yala or Kataragama — for exploring the wider region by safari jeep. Excursions include visits to Udawalawe National Park, home to a wild elephant population, as well as the historic Maduwanwela Walauwwa and the bat-inhabited Wawulpane cave. Guided nature walks, bicycle outings, and bird-watching treks can also be arranged in the surrounding area.
