À propos de cette expérience

A day in Yala begins long before you reach the park gates, with the drive itself easing you out of the coastal rhythm of Koggala and into Sri Lanka's dry south. This full-day safari, run from a private vehicle with a dedicated chauffeur guide, hands you over to a safari jeep and an English-speaking driver once you arrive, leaving you free to watch the road and the scrub roll by rather than manage the logistics.

Yala is Sri Lanka's second-largest national park, a tract of some 979 square kilometres of dry monsoon forest, thorn scrub, open grassland, lagoons and sandy shoreline along the southeastern coast. Public access is largely confined to Block 1, a smaller but densely packed core of around 141 square kilometres, and it is here that Yala has earned its reputation for the highest density of leopards recorded anywhere in the world. Sightings are never guaranteed with a wild predator, but the odds improve through the dry months from around February to July, and early morning or late afternoon light tends to bring animals out to the waterholes.

Beyond the leopard, Yala's waterholes and grass tracks draw elephants moving in family groups, sambar and spotted deer wading at the water's edge, wild boar rooting through the leaf litter, and sloth bears moving through the thicker scrub. Wild water buffalo and crocodiles favour the wetlands, and the park's bird list runs past two hundred species, from peacocks and painted storks to herons and bee-eaters working the branches near the water. The jeep moves at its own pace through this terrain, pausing wherever something is happening, which is really the point of the day.

Practically, the tour runs for a full ten hours and is arranged as a private experience, with hotel pickup and drop-off in Koggala included along with air-conditioned transport to and from the park, the safari jeep itself, its driver, bottled water, and all taxes and service charges. Park entrance fees are not included and should be arranged separately, and the same goes for meals, gratuities and anything of a personal nature. Children are welcome from the age of five, and the booking is set up for a single party travelling together rather than a shared seat on a group vehicle.
