A collection of hero stories in Sinhala, written by L.S.E. Amararathna for young readers. The text is entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so it will suit a reader at home in the language or a family passing it on to children.
Hercules is the figure the book takes its name from. He belongs to Greek myth rather than history, yet he has kept a place in literature close to that of a living hero, and his story — the labours, the adventures, the shape of his reputation — is set out here at length. Alongside it the book gathers accounts of a number of other powerful heroic figures, with details of their lives that are not easily come by elsewhere.
Amararathna writes with children in mind. The collection is put together to build character and self-respect in young readers, and to widen their knowledge of the wider world through the figures it describes. It is published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co., a long-established Sinhala and English publishing house.
