A colouring book for young children, part of a series from M. D. Gunasena intended to give practice at colouring in. This title takes vegetables as its subject.
Each picture is drawn in outline, ready to be filled in, and the vegetable shown is named in English alongside it. So as well as the colouring itself, a child picks up something of what the vegetables are and what they are called in English — the kind of quiet word-learning that happens while a child is busy doing something else.
It suits children at the stage where holding a crayon is still the main event and reading is just beginning. Parents and pre-school teachers in Sri Lanka will know the Gunasena colouring books; this is one of them, on a theme that lends itself to strong, simple shapes and a wide range of colours.
M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd is a long-established Colombo publisher and bookseller, with a substantial list of children's and educational titles in Sinhala and English. This book is in English.
