Vrishabha and Kanya Porondam

Image générée par IA · pas une photographie réelle

Vrishabha (Taurus) and Kanya (Virgo) form a pairing whose rashi-level results change noticeably depending on which partner holds which sign. This page explains the porondam (Sinhala) and porutham (Tamil) readings for both arrangements. It also shows why the two birth stars, not the signs alone, settle the real match.

Which rashi is being matched, and what does the count mean?

In Sri Lankan matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), worked out in the sidereal zodiac. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so your Vrishabha or Kanya may differ from the sign you usually read.

The rashi count is taken by counting from the bride's sign to the groom's sign, including both. Vrishabha and Kanya sit five signs apart one way and nine the other. When the bride is Vrishabha and the groom Kanya, the count is 5. When the bride is Kanya and the groom Vrishabha, the count is 9. Traditional rules treat these two counts differently. That is why the order of the partners matters for the rashi item.

What happens when the bride is Vrishabha and the groom is Kanya?

With a count of 5, the rashi item is not obtained in both the Sinhala porondam and the Tamil porutham.

The rashi lords are Venus for Vrishabha and Mercury for Kanya. These two planets are mutual friends, so rashyadhipathi (rasi adhipathi in Tamil) is obtained in both systems.

Vashya (vasya) is not obtained in either system for this arrangement.

Across the 81 possible star-quarter combinations, 75% pass the Sinhala porondam when weekday is left aside. None reach 8 of the 10 Tamil poruthams. This shows how much the stars, rather than the signs, shape the result.

What happens when the bride is Kanya and the groom is Vrishabha?

Reversed, the count becomes 9, and the rashi item is obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems.

Mercury and Venus remain mutual friends, so rashyadhipathi is again obtained in both.

Vashya is where the two traditions part ways. The Sinhala porondam reads vashya as not obtained, while the Tamil porutham reads vasya as obtained. This is a reminder that the two systems use their own rules.

Of the 81 star-quarter combinations, 95% pass the Sinhala porondam when weekday is excluded. In the Tamil system, 64% reach 8 or more of the 10 poruthams.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Rashi items are only part of the picture. Most porondam and porutham items depend on each person's birth star (nakshatra) and its quarter. Two people born under the same pair of signs can therefore receive very different overall results.

In both arrangements of this pairing, 36% of star combinations come out weak on the Tamil reading. In 36%, the Tamil rajju item is not obtained. The remaining combinations vary widely.
