Question 1

What is Tagetes erecta used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Tagetes erecta is used in ayurvedic and folk medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and digestive properties. Topical preparations from the flowers and leaves are applied to skin irritations and minor wounds, while infusions are used to ease digestive discomfort. The flowers are also a major commercial source of lutein, a carotenoid associated with eye health.

Question 2

Is Tagetes erecta the same as the common marigold?

Accepted Answer

Tagetes erecta is often called the African marigold or Aztec marigold and is distinct from the French marigold, Tagetes patula. Both belong to the genus Tagetes, but Tagetes erecta typically grows taller and produces larger flower heads. It is native to Mexico and Central America, despite its common name suggesting African origin.

Question 3

Why is Tagetes erecta listed as an ayurvedic plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka maintains a formal catalogue of medicinal plants used in its living ayurvedic tradition, and Tagetes erecta is included because it has documented therapeutic applications in both classical and contemporary practice. Its flowers, leaves, and roots each contain bioactive compounds that support its role in skin care, pest management, and digestive health. The plant is also widely cultivated across the island, making it accessible to practitioners and households alike.

Question 4

Can you grow Tagetes erecta in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Tagetes erecta grows readily across Sri Lanka's warm lowland and mid-country zones. It prefers well-drained soil, full sunlight, and moderate watering, and will flower prolifically in these conditions. It is also useful as a companion plant in vegetable gardens because its roots release compounds that deter certain soil nematodes.

Question 5

What part of the Tagetes erecta plant is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Different parts of the plant serve different purposes. The flowers are the primary source of lutein and are used in topical preparations and ritual offerings. The leaves are used in infusions and steam inhalation remedies. The roots contain thiophene derivatives with nematicidal and antimicrobial properties, and the essential oil is extracted from the aerial parts of the plant.

Question 6

Are there any side effects of Tagetes erecta?

Accepted Answer

In culinary and ceremonial quantities, Tagetes erecta is generally considered safe. Some people experience contact dermatitis from handling the fresh plant due to sensitising compounds in the leaves and stems. Concentrated extracts should not be taken internally during pregnancy, and any medicinal use should be guided by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.
