Question 1

What is Tacca leontopetaloides used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

The plant's starchy rhizome is used in traditional and ayurvedic medicine to address digestive complaints, fevers, and skin conditions. Poultices from the leaves or tubers are applied to wounds and inflammatory conditions in several traditional healing systems. Because the raw plant contains bitter and potentially harmful compounds, preparations must be made by trained practitioners.

Question 2

Is Tacca leontopetaloides found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the plant grows in lowland and coastal habitats across Sri Lanka, including forest margins, disturbed ground, and wetland edges. It is listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. It is typically found growing wild rather than cultivated.

Question 3

Can you eat Tacca leontopetaloides?

Accepted Answer

The tubers can yield an edible starch known as East Indian arrowroot, but they require extensive preparation — repeated soaking and washing — to remove bitter and potentially toxic compounds. The resulting starch has been used as a famine food and cooking ingredient in parts of Asia and the Pacific. In Sri Lanka, culinary use is less common than medicinal application.

Question 4

What does Tacca leontopetaloides look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a perennial herb growing to around 1–1.5 metres tall from a large underground tuber. The plant produces broad, deeply divided leaves and highly distinctive umbrella-like flower clusters with long, thread-like bracts that are typically dark purple or greenish-brown. The unusual flower structure makes it easy to recognise in the field.

Question 5

Is Tacca leontopetaloides the same as arrowroot?

Accepted Answer

It is one of several plants historically called arrowroot, sometimes specifically East Indian arrowroot or Polynesian arrowroot. It is a different species from the more widely known commercial arrowroot, Maranta arundinacea. Both yield similar edible starches from their tubers but are botanically distinct.

Question 6

What active compounds are found in Tacca leontopetaloides?

Accepted Answer

Researchers have identified steroidal compounds called taccalonolides in the plant, which have shown anticancer activity in laboratory studies. Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of various extracts have also been reported in scientific literature. None of these compounds have yet been developed into approved pharmaceutical treatments.

Question 7

Where can I see medicinal plants like Tacca leontopetaloides in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Guided botanical walks in nature reserves, spice garden tours, and some eco-lodge experiences offer opportunities to encounter Sri Lanka's medicinal flora. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is among the richest environments for observing endemic and traditional plant species. Ayurvedic wellness centres and institutions affiliated with the Department of Ayurveda can also provide detailed information.
