Question 1

What is Panicum sumatrense used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Panicum sumatrense, or little millet, is used in ayurvedic medicine primarily as a light, cooling grain for patients with fevers, digestive disorders, or those in convalescence. Its grain is considered easy to digest and mildly astringent. It also appears in preparations supporting urinary tract health and as a general nutritive food during illness recovery.

Question 2

Is Panicum sumatrense the same as little millet?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Panicum sumatrense is the botanical name for the plant commonly called little millet or samai in South Asian languages. It belongs to the Poaceae (grass) family and is one of several minor millets cultivated across tropical Asia for food and traditional medicine.

Question 3

Does Panicum sumatrense grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Panicum sumatrense has been cultivated in Sri Lanka, particularly in the dry and intermediate zones where its drought tolerance makes it suitable for seasonal farming. It is catalogued as part of Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic medicinal plant inventory.

Question 4

How is Panicum sumatrense prepared as an ayurvedic remedy?

Accepted Answer

The most common preparation is a simple cooked grain or thin porridge (kanji), especially for patients with fever or digestive weakness. It may also be used in decoctions, milled into flour for medicinal pastes, or included as one ingredient in compound ayurvedic formulations. A qualified ayurvedic physician should guide any therapeutic use.

Question 5

What are the nutritional properties of Panicum sumatrense?

Accepted Answer

Little millet is a whole grain that provides dietary fibre, B vitamins, and minerals including iron and calcium. It has a lower glycaemic load than refined grains, which aligns with its traditional use as a gentle food for patients needing light but nourishing sustenance. Its specific nutritional profile can vary by variety and cultivation conditions.

Question 6

What other ayurvedic plants are documented in Sri Lanka alongside Panicum sumatrense?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's ayurvedic pharmacopoeia is extensive. Plants such as Pongamia pinnata, Acacia chundra, and Syzygium aromaticum (clove) are among the many species documented alongside Panicum sumatrense in the country's traditional medicine catalogs. Each has distinct therapeutic applications within the Sinhala and Ayurvedic traditions.

Question 7

Is there scientific research supporting the ayurvedic uses of little millet?

Accepted Answer

Some scientific studies have investigated the nutritional profile and antioxidant properties of minor millets including Panicum sumatrense, generally supporting their value as nutritious whole grains. Research specifically validating classical ayurvedic indications is more limited, and traditional uses are primarily supported by long-standing documented practice rather than clinical trials.
