Question 1

What does FTGFOP mean on a tea box?

Accepted Answer

FTGFOP stands for Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe. It is the highest grade in the orthodox whole-leaf tea grading system, indicating a leaf that contains an exceptional proportion of golden tips (buds) and has been carefully manufactured to preserve the integrity of the leaf. The grade is used for both Ceylon and Darjeeling teas.

Question 2

What is the difference between FTGFOP and FTGFOP1?

Accepted Answer

FTGFOP1 is a superlative sub-grade within FTGFOP, reserved for the very finest lots in a given harvest — typically single-estate teas that achieve the highest quality scores during grading. The "1" signals that the batch represents the estate's peak production for that flush period. Not all FTGFOP teas carry this designation.

Question 3

Does the FTGFOP grade guarantee the best-tasting tea?

Accepted Answer

Grade reflects leaf appearance, tip content, and manufacturing quality, not flavour alone. FTGFOP teas generally produce an elegant, floral, and bright cup, but personal taste preferences vary. Some drinkers prefer the bolder character of lower-grade broken-leaf teas. The grade is best understood as an indicator of craftsmanship and origin rather than an absolute quality ranking.

Question 4

Which Sri Lanka region produces the finest FTGFOP tea?

Accepted Answer

Nuwara Eliya is most often associated with the finest FTGFOP Ceylon teas, particularly during the first-quarter season from January to March. Dimbula and Uva are also important high-grown districts that produce FTGFOP-grade tea, each with a distinct flavour character influenced by altitude, soil, and seasonal winds.

Question 5

How long should you steep FTGFOP loose-leaf tea?

Accepted Answer

Because the leaves are large and whole, FTGFOP tea generally requires 3–4 minutes in water just off the boil (around 90–95 °C). A shorter steep gives a lighter, more aromatic cup; longer steeping deepens colour and body. The leaves can typically sustain a second infusion with an extended steep time.

Question 6

Is FTGFOP Ceylon tea the same as Orange Pekoe found in supermarket tea bags?

Accepted Answer

No. Supermarket "Orange Pekoe" tea bags usually contain BOPF (Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings) or CTC (cut-tear-curl) grades, which are finely cut particles designed to brew quickly and strongly. FTGFOP is an orthodox whole-leaf grade at the opposite end of the spectrum — slow-brewed, nuanced, and significantly more expensive per gram.

Question 7

Can I visit a Sri Lankan tea estate that produces FTGFOP tea?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Several high-country estates in the Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula, and Uva regions welcome visitors and offer guided factory tours. Bluefield Tea Gardens near Nuwara Eliya is one well-known example. These visits typically include a walk through the plucking fields, a demonstration of the orthodox manufacturing process, and a tasting session.
