What is Ficus benghalensis called in Sri Lanka?

In Sri Lanka, Ficus benghalensis is known as 'Nuga' (නුග) in Sinhala. It is the banyan tree, widely found in temple grounds, village commons, and along roadsides across the island's lowland zones.

What are the medicinal uses of the banyan tree in ayurveda?

Ayurvedic practice uses the bark, aerial roots, latex, and leaves of Ficus benghalensis for a range of applications including digestive support, skin conditions, oral health, and managing inflammatory complaints. Modern research has also investigated its antidiabetic properties. Any therapeutic use should be supervised by a qualified practitioner.

Is the banyan tree sacred in Sri Lanka?

Yes. The banyan is closely associated with Buddhist and Hindu religious practice in Sri Lanka. Mature trees near temples are often garlanded and illuminated with oil lamps during observances, and they traditionally serve as communal gathering spaces in villages.

Where can I see large banyan trees in Sri Lanka?

Notable banyan trees can be found in temple courtyards and village centres across the dry zone, particularly in the North Central and North Western provinces. Ancient sites such as Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa have mature specimens growing in and around the archaeological remains.

What wildlife depends on the banyan tree?

The banyan is a keystone species for Sri Lankan wildlife. Its year-round supply of small figs feeds fruit bats, hornbills, parakeets, mynas, and numerous other birds. The canopy also shelters lizards and insects, making a mature banyan a miniature biodiversity hotspot.

How do banyan trees grow their distinctive aerial roots?

Aerial roots emerge from horizontal branches and grow downward under gravity. When they reach the soil they root and thicken over decades into secondary trunks, which in turn can produce their own branches and new aerial roots. This process means a single tree can eventually form a grove-like structure spanning a very wide area.

Is Ficus benghalensis the same as the Bodhi tree?

No, they are different species within the same genus. The Bodhi tree is Ficus religiosa, distinguished by its heart-shaped leaves with a long drip tip. Ficus benghalensis (the banyan) has broader, oval leaves and is known for its aerial prop roots, which Ficus religiosa does not produce in the same manner.
