Question 1

What is Delhousie Sri Lanka known for?

Accepted Answer

Delhousie is the main trailhead village for climbing Adam's Peak (Sri Pada), one of Sri Lanka's most sacred mountains. It sits in the highland tea country of Sabaragamuwa Province and draws pilgrims of multiple faiths alongside general trekkers during the pilgrimage season from December to May.

Question 2

How many steps are there on the Adam's Peak trail from Delhousie?

Accepted Answer

The Delhousie trail to the summit has around 5,500 steps along approximately 7 kilometres of ascent. The number is approximate as counts differ slightly depending on the source and where counting begins. The climb typically takes 2.5 to 4 hours at a comfortable pace.

Question 3

Can I climb Adam's Peak outside the pilgrimage season?

Accepted Answer

The official pilgrimage season runs from December to May, and the summit temple is only open during this period. Outside the season, the trail is not maintained and conditions — including mist, rain, and overgrown paths — make the climb significantly more difficult and less rewarding. Most visitors are advised to plan within the season.

Question 4

How long is the drive from Kandy to Delhousie?

Accepted Answer

The drive from Kandy to Delhousie takes roughly two to three hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The route passes through tea-estate highlands and is scenic but winding. Many trekkers make the drive in the evening to begin the climb before midnight.

Question 5

What time should I start climbing Adam's Peak to catch the sunrise?

Accepted Answer

Most trekkers begin the climb between midnight and 2 a.m. to reach the summit around dawn. Sunrise time varies by month — it is generally around 6 a.m. during peak season. Starting too early means waiting in the cold at the summit; starting too late risks missing the sunrise view.

Question 6

Is there accommodation available in Delhousie?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Delhousie has a range of guesthouses and small hotels catering to trekkers. Most offer simple rooms and meals. Availability is limited during busy full-moon nights and weekends in peak season, so booking in advance is recommended.

Question 7

What is the sacred footprint at the summit of Adam's Peak?

Accepted Answer

The summit of Adam's Peak features a rock indentation approximately 1.8 metres long, enshrined in a temple. Buddhists consider it the footprint of the Buddha; Hindus attribute it to Shiva; Christians and Muslims associate it with Adam or St Thomas. This multi-faith significance makes it one of the most universally venerated sites in Sri Lanka.

Question 8

Is there a fee to climb Adam's Peak from Delhousie?

Accepted Answer

During the pilgrimage season, the trail is open to all and there is no standard entry fee for the trail itself. Donations at the summit temple are customary. Some facilities along the route, such as certain resting areas, may charge a small fee. Government fee structures can change, so it is worth checking locally before your visit.
