Question 1

How much caffeine is in decaf Ceylon tea?

Accepted Answer

By law, tea labelled decaffeinated must contain less than 2.5% of its original caffeine content. In practice, a brewed cup of decaf Ceylon tea typically contains around 2–5 mg of caffeine, compared with 40–70 mg in a regular cup. It is not completely caffeine-free, just significantly reduced.

Question 2

What is the best method for decaffeinating tea?

Accepted Answer

The CO₂ supercritical method is widely regarded as the best because it selectively removes caffeine while leaving flavour compounds largely intact. The ethyl acetate and methylene chloride solvent methods are more common and less expensive, but can strip some of the tea's nuance. If flavour quality is a priority, look for CO₂-processed decaf on the label.

Question 3

Does decaf tea taste different from regular tea?

Accepted Answer

Decaf tea tastes softer and slightly less astringent than its regular counterpart, because some of the compounds that contribute body and bitterness are removed alongside the caffeine. High-quality Ceylon leaf processed with the CO₂ method retains most of its characteristic flavour. Many drinkers find decaf pleasant for afternoon and evening cups precisely because of its gentler profile.

Question 4

Can I drink decaf Ceylon tea if I am pregnant?

Accepted Answer

Many healthcare providers advise pregnant individuals to reduce caffeine intake, and decaf tea is generally considered a lower-risk alternative to regular tea or coffee. However, decaf is not entirely caffeine-free, so it is best to discuss your specific intake limits with a doctor or midwife. Herbal infusions that contain no tea leaf at all are the only truly caffeine-free option.

Question 5

Is Ceylon decaf tea available in loose-leaf form?

Accepted Answer

Yes, though it is less widely stocked than decaf tea bags. Loose-leaf Ceylon decaf is available from specialist tea retailers and directly from Sri Lanka-based suppliers. Whole-leaf and broken-leaf grades are both processed using decaffeination, and the choice of grade affects brewing time and strength in the same way it does for regular tea.

Question 6

How do I brew decaf tea for the best flavour?

Accepted Answer

Use water at around 85–90 °C rather than a full rolling boil to protect the more delicate aromatic compounds in decaffeinated leaf. Steep for 2–3 minutes for a BOP-grade decaf, or up to 4 minutes for a whole-leaf grade. Avoid over-steeping, which can introduce bitterness even in decaf.

Question 7

Why is decaf tea more expensive than regular tea?

Accepted Answer

The decaffeination step adds a significant processing cost on top of normal tea production. CO₂ supercritical processing in particular requires specialised equipment and higher energy inputs. The resulting price premium typically ranges from 20–50% above an equivalent non-decaf grade, depending on the method used and the quality of the original leaf.
