Question 1

What is Cyperus javanicus used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Cyperus javanicus is recorded in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic pharmacopoeia primarily for its potential digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. The rhizomes and roots are the parts most commonly used in traditional preparations. As with any plant medicine, use should be guided by a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Cyperus javanicus grow naturally?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows across tropical and subtropical Asia, including Sri Lanka, where it favours moist habitats such as paddy field margins, riverbanks, and wetland edges in the lowland wet and intermediate zones. It is not generally found at higher elevations.

Question 3

Is Cyperus javanicus the same as Cyperus rotundus?

Accepted Answer

No, they are distinct species within the same genus. Cyperus rotundus, commonly called nagarmotha or musta, is more widely cited in classical Ayurvedic texts and has a different distribution and rhizome profile. Cyperus javanicus shares some botanical similarities but is a separate species with its own documented uses.

Question 4

What family does Cyperus javanicus belong to?

Accepted Answer

Cyperus javanicus belongs to the family Cyperaceae, commonly known as the sedge family. It is a flowering plant with triangular stems and narrow leaves, typically growing in damp or seasonally flooded environments.

Question 5

How is Cyperus javanicus identified in the field?

Accepted Answer

The plant forms tufted clumps with distinctly triangular stems and long, narrow leaves. Its inflorescences are branched and umbrella-like, bearing flattened spikelets — a characteristic feature of the Cyperus genus. It typically grows between 30 and 90 centimetres tall in wetland or marshy settings.

Question 6

Is Cyperus javanicus an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not considered threatened at present, as it tolerates disturbed habitats and agricultural margins as well as natural wetlands. However, ongoing loss of lowland wetland ecosystems and the decline of traditional paddy farming do reduce the availability of its preferred habitat over time.

Question 7

How does ayurvedic plant medicine work in Sri Lanka today?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has a formally recognised system of traditional medicine regulated by the Department of Ayurveda under the Ministry of Health. Registered practitioners use documented plant species, including Cyperus javanicus, in both single-herb and compound preparations. Traditional medicine clinics operate alongside modern healthcare facilities across the country.
