Question 1

How do I get from Colombo to Mattala Airport?

Accepted Answer

The most reliable option is a private transfer, which takes approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic. Most drivers use the Southern Expressway (E01) for the bulk of the journey before joining local roads near Hambantota. Book at least 48 hours in advance to guarantee availability.

Question 2

How far is Mattala Airport from Hambantota?

Accepted Answer

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is approximately 18 km north-east of Hambantota town. The drive typically takes around 25 to 30 minutes by car. It is the closest major city to the airport.

Question 3

Is there a bus from Galle to Mattala Airport?

Accepted Answer

Public buses connect Galle to Hambantota, but there is no direct service to the airport terminal itself, and schedules rarely align with international flight times. A private transfer from Galle is more practical and takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours.

Question 4

Can I stop at Udawalawe on the way to Mattala Airport?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if your flight time allows. Udawalawe National Park lies on a natural route between the hill country or Colombo and the airport. Many travellers combine a morning safari or a stop at the Elephant Transit Home with an afternoon departure. Arrange this with your driver or DMC when booking.

Question 5

What vehicle types are available for Mattala Airport transfers?

Accepted Answer

Private sedans and SUVs suit individuals and small groups, while minivans or minibuses are available for larger parties or those with substantial luggage. Luxury vehicles can usually be arranged on request. Confirm your preference and group size when booking.

Question 6

How early should I arrive at Mattala Airport before my flight?

Accepted Answer

Most international carriers recommend being at the airport at least two hours before departure. Mattala's terminal is compact and check-in is generally quicker than at Colombo, but it is still advisable to arrive with some buffer, particularly if your flight is in the early morning.

Question 7

Does Mattala Airport handle all international flights from Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No. The majority of Sri Lanka's international flights operate through Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. Mattala handles a smaller, variable number of international and charter routes. Always confirm which airport your specific flight departs from before booking a transfer.
