Villa Samsara, Weligama, Sri Lanka

Villa Samsara is famed as an exquisite country house that radiates colonial majesty in the south of Sri Lanka. Situated in a former coconut plantation by the coast of Weligama, it offers a quietly elegant retreat where the rhythms of the Indian Ocean and the rustling of palm groves set the tone for the entire stay.

The villa lies in a small village in the town of Weligama, approximately 140 km from Colombo. The most convenient route is the Colombo–Galle–Matara main coastal road, and both buses and trains are available for those travelling by public transport. The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport takes between four and five hours, while Koggala Airport is just 10 km away.

Accommodation

Four comfortable double bedrooms are available for guests, each uniquely designed and beautifully furnished in colonial-style furniture. Every room measures 40 square metres and is equipped with an attached bathroom featuring hot water, a shower, a WC and a fan. Some rooms include elegant four-poster beds draped with netting and colourful bedspreads, lending a graceful, period character to the space.

Dining and the Pavilion

The Pavilion at Villa Samsara consists of shaded terraces where guests can relax and enjoy spectacular views of the palm groves and the Indian Ocean. Dining can be enjoyed at any one of the four terraces or in the living area, with attentive staff serving seafood specialties alongside local, Asian and Chinese dishes. À la carte menus are available in the evenings and for additional meals.

Facilities

For everyday comfort, the villa provides a television, radio, a library, indoor games, Ayurveda massages and fitness equipment. A large open-air courtyard connects the beautiful garden with the pavilion and its shaded terraces. The resident team includes a manager, chef, steward, gardener and masseuse. Beds are made daily, linen is changed twice a week, and towels are provided for all guests. A laundry service is available at an extra cost.

Activities and Excursions

The beach is within easy access of the villa, and the manager can arrange local sightseeing tours and fishing trips on request. Diving centres are found in both Weligama and Unawatuna for guests wishing to explore the underwater world, and light surfing can be enjoyed during the peak season. The season from November to April is noted for whale and dolphin sightings, while fishing trips and sailing along the coast can be enjoyed throughout the year.

The historical cities of Galle and Matara lie within close proximity, offering visits to attractions such as the Galle Fort, the Galle Maritime Museum, turtle farms, and tea and cinnamon plantations, among many others.
