Off Road in Yala Park

Yala National Park is one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated wildlife reserves, and this footage captures the raw, unfiltered experience of travelling its rugged tracks by off-road vehicle. The park's untamed landscape — a mix of scrub jungle, open plains, and abandoned reservoirs — provides the backdrop for encounters that few other destinations on the island can match.

The park is home to no less than 32 species of mammals, making every drive through its terrain a genuine exercise in discovery. Patience and a keen eye are rewarded at almost every turn.

Large Mammals

Among the most sought-after sightings are the park's larger mammals. The elusive leopard is perhaps the most celebrated resident, while the sloth bear, elephant, and water buffalo round out a quartet of large species that draw wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. The density of leopards in particular is considered notably high relative to their range.

Birds of Yala

Yala's birdlife is equally impressive in its variety. The peacock is a common and colourful presence along the roadsides, while raptors such as the crested serpent eagle and the white-bellied sea eagle command the skies above. Wading birds and waterbirds thrive around the park's wetlands — the lesser flamingo, pelican, spoonbill, and painted stork are all recorded here, along with the elegant purple heron.

Crocodiles and Waterways

The park's water bodies support two distinct crocodile species. Mugger crocodiles are abundant in the abandoned reservoirs that are scattered across the reserve, while estuarine crocodiles make their home in the rivers. Both species can be observed from a safe distance during an off-road safari, adding a reptilian dimension to what is already a remarkably diverse wildlife experience.
