La Maison Nil Manel, Ahungalla, Sri Lanka

Tucked into a lovingly laid-out garden in Ahungalla — a quiet village on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, roughly 80 km from Colombo — La Maison Nil Manel is a heritage holiday house unlike an ordinary hotel. Sitting just 200 metres from the Indian Ocean, the property brings together colonial-era antiques, lush tropical planting and intimate, personalised hospitality in a setting that feels closer to a private home than a resort.

The first thing that strikes a visitor is the visual character of the place. Every building is painted white, and that crisp exterior sets off the dark-wood antique furniture within, creating an impression that is both noble and warm. Colourful accents and carefully chosen antique accessories soften the formality and give each corner of the property a calm, unhurried atmosphere.

The Garden and Common Spaces

The heart of La Maison Nil Manel is its inner garden, visible from the open restaurant and the bar that looks out over it. Little ponds, water elements, towering coconut palms and ferns give the grounds the feeling of a fairytale landscape. A large pool fitted with jet-stream massage jets is set alongside a sun deck, where a small bar provides refreshment without guests needing to stray far from the water.

Accommodation

The property offers six one-room apartments arranged through the garden, each with an open terrace and its own small private garden. Guests may choose between a twin-bed arrangement and a king-bed arrangement. Inside every apartment is a bright, spacious bedroom and a bathroom equipped with shower and toilet — some apartments also include a bath tub.

The furnishing of each room is both tasteful and unique. All the beds, cupboards, chests of drawers, doors and several windows are antique pieces sourced from across Sri Lanka, collected and painstakingly restored over many years by Monique, the owner. The dark-wood beds in particular make comfort feel immediate and instinctive. Fine paintings on the walls and doors, along with typical Sri Lankan accessories, give each room its own distinct character. All apartments are equipped with air conditioning and a fan, and a laundry service is available to guests.

Experiences at the Property

La Maison Nil Manel offers a handful of experiences that allow guests to engage more deeply with Sri Lankan culture. Ayurveda massages are conducted by Mr Rathna, a practitioner locally well known in the area, in 45-minute sessions. A hands-on cooking experience lets guests prepare a typical local dish — served at either lunch or dinner — while learning about the different spices and flavours found in Sri Lankan cuisine.

Monique also runs La Boutique, a small shop within the property where she presents rare and exclusive antiques sourced from Sri Lanka and India, alongside clothes, fabrics and jewellery available for purchase.

Surroundings

The beautiful beach, stretching for 5 km, lies just 200 metres from the hotel. Bentota, approximately 15 km away, offers a range of water sports facilities, while Hikkaduwa, also around 15 km distant, is home to several diving schools catering to different levels of experience.
