Bentota Beach, Bentota, Sri Lanka
Bentota Beach Hotel holds a special place in Sri Lankan hospitality as one of the very first beach resort hotels the country ever built. It occupies a narrow strip of land between the Bentota Beach and the Bentota River, and its expansive gardens — shaded by groves of coconut palms and spread across 30 acres — are laid out in the traditions of Colonial Dutch Architecture. The result is a property that feels rooted in the landscape rather than imposed upon it.
Much of the hotel's enduring character is attributed to the architectural concepts of Geoffrey Bawa, whose vision shaped a building that opens itself generously to its surroundings. Every aspect of the layout is designed to frame grand views of beach, river and verdant green land simultaneously, a quality that has made it one of the most sought-after beach resort hotels in Sri Lanka.
Setting and Location
Bentota is a prime beach holiday destination situated 65 km south of Colombo. The hotel can be reached along the Colombo–Galle main road or via the southern railway line that runs from Colombo to Matara along the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
The Beach and Gardens
Expansive golden sandy beaches front the property, offering space to relax in the sun, let children play safely, take a leisurely stroll at the water's edge, or settle in for a stunning sunset. The hotel's gardens complement the beach experience with shaded palm groves, well-maintained grassy lawns and room for outdoor games. For something altogether more festive, the Bentota Beach Hotel River Boat is available for parties while floating on the Bentota lagoon and river.
Accommodation
The hotel houses 133 rooms in total, each presenting scenic views of the surrounding landscape. As a general rule, the higher the floor, the better the outlook across beach, lagoon, river and green land.
