The Vessantara story came into Sinhala literature through the Pansiya Panas Jataka Pota, the collection of birth stories of the Bodhisattva, and it has been familiar among people in Sri Lanka for a very long time. This retelling by V.D. De Lenarol is compiled with that familiarity in mind, and with the particular needs of students in view: the story is prescribed within the school system and set for higher examinations, and the book has been put together to suit that use.
The text is written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English translation here, so readers will need to be comfortable reading Sinhala prose to use it.
