This is a Sinhala translation of Nikolai Ostrovsky's Soviet novel, usually known in English as How the Steel Was Tempered. The text is entirely in Sinhala, so it will suit readers of that language rather than buyers looking for an English edition.
The novel is semi-autobiographical. Its central figure, Pavel Korchagin, takes part in the Russian Revolution and in the civil war that followed, and the book follows the physical and emotional hardship he endures through those years. Ostrovsky published the work in parts; this volume carries the opening part, with the story continuing beyond it.
The Sinhala rendering is by Dedigama V. Rodrigo, whose translations from Russian have long circulated among Sinhala readers. The translation has appeared before under other publishers' imprints. It now comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd of Colombo, issued with the formal permission of the Russian embassy.
Of interest to Sinhala readers of Russian and Soviet literature, to anyone returning to a translation they first met years ago, and to readers building a shelf of Rodrigo's work.
