Your private, air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your Kalutara hotel and heads south along Sri Lanka's coastline. First stop is Handunugoda, where you walk through a working tea estate and see how leaves are withered, rolled, and graded — a hands-on look at the craft behind Ceylon tea. From there, pull over at the shoreline to watch stilt fishermen balance on their poles above the shallows, a technique unique to this stretch of coast. A fresh seafood lunch breaks up the day before you continue to Kosgoda.
The afternoon centres on Galle, the colonial-era port city whose UNESCO-listed Fort encloses Dutch ramparts, a lighthouse, and cobbled streets lined with boutiques and cafés.
