A Russian children's story, published here in Sinhala. The original was written by Viktor Vazhdayev; the Sinhala translation is by Dedigama V. Rodrigo. The whole book is in Sinhala, so a reader will need the language to follow it.
The tale turns on a remarkable mortar that produces bread, buns and the like, and gathers around it a witch and a pair of siblings, an elder brother and his younger sister. It is a short narrative of the kind written for children, and the Sinhala version has been read and reread by generations of Sinhala-speaking young readers.
The translation has appeared before under other publishing houses. This edition comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co., issued with the formal permission of the Russian embassy.
Dedigama V. Rodrigo is known to Sinhala readers as a translator of Russian literature, and this title sits in that body of work: stories originally written for Soviet children, carried into Sinhala in language meant to be read aloud or read alone by a child. For households raising children in Sinhala abroad, or for adults who met these stories first in childhood and want a copy on the shelf, this is the Gunasena printing of a book that has been passing between Sri Lankan readers for a long time.
