Rata Ratawala Rasa Katha

Fra13.39 DKK

A collection of children's stories drawn from countries around the world, gathered into one Sinhala volume by the newspaper journalist Sriya Ratnakara. The tales come from different national traditions, retold for young Sinhala readers.

The text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English in the book, so it suits households where children read Sinhala, families abroad keeping the language alive at home, and adults learning to read it. Read-aloud is the obvious use — the stories are short enough to take one at a time at bedtime, and older children can work through them alone.

Sriya Ratnakara compiled the selection; her working life was in newspapers, and the writing carries that plainness. The publisher is M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, a long-established Sinhala and English house whose list includes a good deal of schoolbook and children's publishing.

Worth considering if you are building a Sinhala-language shelf for a child and want something beyond folk tales from Sri Lanka alone.
