Twelve Russian stories, translated into Sinhala by Dedigama V. Rodrigo and gathered in a single volume. The book is in Sinhala throughout — an international buyer who does not read the language will not be able to use it, and it is best suited to Sinhala readers at home or abroad who want Russian fiction in their own language.

The writers represented lived and worked in Russia across the eighteenth to twentieth centuries. Among them are Alexander Pushkin, Sergei Aksakov, Antony Pogorelsky, Vladimir Odoevsky, Mikhail Lermontov, Vladimir Dahl, Nikolai Gogol, Filipp Vigel, Konstantin Leontiev, Alexander Kuprin and Konstantin Paustovsky. The selection therefore spans several generations of Russian writing rather than concentrating on one author or one period.

The translations are Rodrigo's, and they have appeared in print before under other publishers' imprints. This volume brings them out as an M. D. Gunasena publication, issued with the official permission of the Russian embassy.

M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd is an established Colombo publisher and bookseller, publishing in Sinhala and English. For readers outside Sri Lanka, Sinhala translations of Russian literature are not easy to come by, and this collection puts a group of them in one place.
