Piyambana Thoppiya

Fra13.39 DKK

A Sinhala children's story about a hat that travels from head to head. It goes looking among all sorts of people before it finally comes to belong to a fish seller — and that small chain of encounters is the whole of the tale.

The text is in Sinhala throughout, so it will suit readers of the language: Sinhala-speaking families abroad reading aloud to young children, children learning to read in Sinhala, or anyone building a home library of Sri Lankan picture books in the original language. There is no English text, and buyers outside Sri Lanka should know that before ordering.

Sybil Wettasinghe was a Sri Lankan writer and illustrator of children's books, and her work in Sinhala is familiar to generations who grew up with it. Her stories tend to be short, plainly told and rooted in everyday village and town life, with ordinary people and ordinary objects at the centre of them — here, simply a hat and the heads it tries out.

Published by M. D. Gunasena & Co., an established Colombo house issuing books in Sinhala and English, including a long list of children's titles and school material.
