A Sinhala commentary on the Maha Satipatthana Sutta, the discourse on the establishing of mindfulness. The text is written entirely in Sinhala, with no English translation, so it will suit readers who are comfortable in the language.
Labugama Sri Lankananda Thero works from the terms themselves. Sati is mindfulness; patthana is establishing or setting up. Satipatthana, then, is the proper establishing of mindfulness upon a fit object of attention. The commentary sets out why this practice matters in Buddhist terms: it serves the destruction of suffering and grief, and the growth of wisdom. On that basis the author takes the view that satipatthana is something every Buddhist ought to understand properly, and the book is offered as a support to that understanding.
Published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a long-established Sri Lankan house publishing in Sinhala and English. It will be of interest to Sinhala-reading Buddhists working through the Satipatthana discourse, to meditators who want a doctrinal grounding for the practice rather than a set of instructions alone, and to readers abroad building a Sinhala-language Dhamma shelf.
