Maha Pirith Potha

Fra23.88 DKK

This is the Sinhala collection of protective suttas known in Buddhist practice as pirith. The word covers anything from which protection or refuge is obtained, and in that broad sense the whole of the Tripitaka may be regarded as pirith. The Maha Pirith Potha is the narrower, settled compilation: the discourses delivered by the Buddha for averting illness, the fear of non-human beings, and famine, gathered into a single volume.

Published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd of Colombo, an established Sri Lankan publishing house issuing books in Sinhala and English.

The text is in Sinhala. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should order it on that basis — there is no English translation or transliteration in this edition, and reading it requires the Sinhala script. It will suit households that keep a copy for daily or occasional recitation, Sinhala-reading Buddhists living abroad, and temple and dhamma-school use.

For anyone building a Sinhala-language Buddhist shelf, this is one of the standard household books, sitting alongside the devotional and doctrinal texts rather than the scholarly ones.
